Film Fashion 1998

Flat Eric I.D

Directed by Quentin Dupieux

Insight

We can't help, but judge based on appearances, allowing surface to override substance.

Idea

Show how an immaculate pair of Levi’s can get you away with almost anything.

Execution

A dodgy man is pulled over but waved on because of his perfectly pressed Levi’s, with a surreal cameo from a puppet.

Notes

Legend has it that when presenting this (to be honest relatively straight idea for an ad) Sir John Hegarty, of BBH, presented every story board frame in excruciating detail. Leaving out the fact that this road trip duo was one half puppet. BBH had to re-present this campaign to client 3 times after the furry yellow dude was revealed. Lucky they did. The campaign became the early 2000s equivalent of viral. The song topped the dance music charts. The puppet became an icon. And Levi’s flew off the shelves.
